My Take on Authenticity in Marketing
In a world full of scripted content, authenticity is your edge.
“People connect with people, not just scripted words.”
When I'm scrolling, I can feel it...can't you?
There are some pieces of content that keep you reading. You feel the authenticity within the words. It feels genuine; it feels real. Then there are some that feel cold, instructional, and scripted. When you're scrolling, can you feel it too?
Let's take a moment for authenticity and how it fits into your marketing. The word "authentic" can be scary for some, even confusing. But, in today's AI-filled world, I find myself wanting to be more and more authentic in my own marketing and in my own writing and find others' messaging even more appealing when they are showing their authentic side too.
Authenticity to me is simply being okay with being you in the digital space, allowing your own voice to come through, and writing the way you talk. When someone reads your content, they should hear you. Your personality should shine through.
With that said, authenticity isn't an open invitation to share every opinion…always show up with grace, respect, and class.
Being vulnerable is hard, and opening up feels risky. A lot of people simply don't know what to share. They don't realize their everyday moments are content. I always tell people, "Open up to your comfort level." It could be the reflection you had on vacation. The story about where you were and where you are now. Why do you do what you do? Share the photo of you on your patio and why that makes you happy. Use a professional moment to share something about you personally. Talk about a question a client asked you this week. Show where you came from. Want to take it up a notch? Record and post a video, reel, or even a quick, few-second talk on your Instagram stories.
There is an endless list of ideas that can really uplevel your digital world that is softer and less robotic. Honestly, I'm drawn to hearing other people's stories because it allows me to learn about them and see a glimpse into their personal, more human side. People connect with people, not just scripted words.
There was a turning point for me when it felt "so right" to go from a closed book to more of an open book. That moment happened when I found my passion, and it made my story so much easier to tell. Maybe it was the imposter syndrome stopping me. "Who am I to share this?" "Showing who Amy is and what Amy does isn't going to work." "I don't stack up to all the other 'experts' out there." Sound familiar? All of my chapters led to where I am today. Now, I feel like I'm proud to say these are steps I've gone through to get where I am, and if you like what you see and who I am...well then, I'm your girl.
I give you permission to be yourself.
Your online presence is yours to sculpt. Think about that feeling you get when you're scrolling and something causes you to pause...something that feels so real, warm, and human. That could be you giving someone else those same feelings.
When you show up as you, the right people will find you 🧡
