What Even Is Content Creation? (People Ask Me This a Lot)
It's not photography. It's not videography. So what is it?
"As AI content becomes more common, real, human-captured moments are going to matter even more, not less."
I get some form of these questions along with a little confused head tilt, a lot. “What do you mean by content creation?" "Wait, what do you do at weddings?" “Where is the content used?" and just plain… “What?!”
I’m starting to learn that this is very foreign to the majority of people I talk to, which has led me to offer this explanation.
Short answer: I capture moments and create content that helps tell a story on the internet.
This is the simplest way to explain it. I am not a videographer. I am not a photographer. I am a content creator, and that is a completely different thing. Content creation is capturing moments specifically built for social media, which are short, story-driven clips and photos meant to be watched, felt, and shared.
Reading the Moment
Anyone can capture a moment. But content creation is about knowing which moment to capture. I'm not just standing there with my phone up. I am watching and observing the room. Is there about to be a laugh, hands in the air, a room full of clapping? Or is it a quieter, sweet moment…a hug, a handshake, a glance across the room between two people? I feel like half of this job is anticipating what's coming before it happens, so I'm ready when it does.

The Wedding Industry
Weddings have photographers and videographers booked months in advance. Their services produce beautiful, polished, timeless work. Content creators do something different. We are capturing the behind-the-scenes and in-between moments. It’s the dad seeing his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress, it’s the bride having the best time on the dance floor, and it’s the laughter and the tears that are captured so you can relive those exact moments again. It’s raw, real, and immediate, with content being released within hours, not months.
Beyond the Weddings
Content creation isn’t just for the wedding day. It’s just been where the majority of my on-site content creation portfolio has been built. For my small business clients, it’s been capturing the behind-the-scenes moments at their business, capturing moments at a new business launch, or even at a private corporate event. It's less "here's a beautiful photo" and more "here's what it's actually like to work with me or buy from me, or even just this is what happened at the event and how it felt to be in the room.”
It's the Graphics Too
Content creation isn't only what happens on-site with a phone or camera in hand…it's also the graphics, the captions, and the writing. It's every piece that goes into telling a story on social media. Whether I'm designing a graphic, writing a caption, or putting together an educational post, I'm doing the same thing: painting a picture of who you are and what you offer and helping you show a little of your personality too.
The AI Angle
This is something I think about a lot as we speed into this world of AI. This content is raw and real. It’s not AI-generated, and it’s not staged. These are actual moments, actual people, actual reactions. I have a feeling that as AI content becomes more common, real, human-captured moments are going to matter even more, not less. People are going to crave it! Just my opinion ;)
Why does this content matter? People want the inside scoop. They are curious…we all are! They want to know who they might be working with. They want to see your work, and they want to feel that connection before they ever pick up the phone.
Content creation builds this familiarity, and it tells a story. Whatever industry, whatever event, the content ends up telling a story. For me this is truly one of my favorite parts of this job. I’m capturing real laughter and real vibes, which allows me to tell a real story.
I had the opportunity to put all of this into practice a few weeks ago at a wedding in Venice Beach, California. This was my first out-of-area wedding and one of the best days I've had doing this work. I mean…there’s just something extra special about loving what you’re doing and, in this case, getting some sand between my toes too 🧡
